REPORT OF THE COMPTROLLER AND AUDITOR GENERAL

ON THE ACCOUNT OF THE TREASURER OF HONG KONG

FOR THE YEAR 1909.

1. The Revenue for the year 1909 amount

ed to $6,822,966.93, being $113,970.93 more

than the Estimate and $718,759.60 more than

the Revenue of 1908.

2. The Expenditure during the year,

exclusive of that on the Canton-Kowloon Rail-

way amounted to $6,542,839.32, being less than

the Estimate by $238,326.68 and less than the expenditure of 1908 by $30,502.09.

The excesses on the several Heads requir-

ing legislative sanction, amounting to

$321,769.88 have been duly provided for by Supplementary Appropriation Ordinance No:19

of 1910 and the excesses on sub-heads which

have been met out of savings on other sub-

heads of the same Votes have been duly sanc-

tioned by the Secretary of State.

3. The amount realized by the sale of

Hospital Hulk "Hygeia", $25,000, was at first

credited to Miscellaneous Receipts but has

since been transferred to the credit of Rx-

penditure Head Public Works Extraordinary. In reply to an enquiry I have recently been informed that the ground for the change was

that the first cost of this Vessel was charg-

ed to that Head. I an, however, unable to accept the explanation and consider that the original classification was correct.
